iKnowMom Privacy Policy

iKnowMom ("Company," "we," "us," or "our") operates the iKnowMom mobile application and website at iknowmom.com (collectively, the "Service"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and protect information about you when you use our Service.
By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to the collection and use of information as described in this policy.
1. Who We Are
iKnowMom is a parental financial monitoring service that allows parents to receive notifications and exercise approval controls over their minor children's peer-to-peer financial transactions. We are not a bank, payment processor, or financial institution. We do not hold, move, or process money.

2. Information We Collect
2.1 Information You Provide Directly
- Account information: your name and phone number when you create a parent account
- Child profiles: your child's name, age, and optionally their phone number
- Approval threshold settings: the dollar amount above which you require approval
- Notes and messages: optional notes you add when approving or denying a transaction
- Communications: messages you send to our support team
2.2 Financial Data Obtained Through Plaid
When you link a bank account or debit card, we use Plaid Technologies, Inc. ("Plaid") to connect to your child's financial institution. Through this connection we receive:
- Transaction history: merchant name, amount, date, and transaction category
- Account information: account type, last four digits of account number, institution name
- Balance information: current and available balance (used solely to provide context for approval decisions)
We do not receive or store your child's bank login credentials. Those are entered directly into Plaid's secure interface and are never transmitted to or stored by iKnowMom. Your use of Plaid is also governed by Plaid's Privacy Policy, available at plaid.com/legal.
2.3 Information Collected Automatically
- Device information: device type, operating system, and app version
- Usage data: features accessed, screens viewed, and actions taken within the app
- Push notification tokens: device tokens used to deliver notifications to your phone
- Log data: server logs including IP address, request timestamps, and error information (logs do not contain financial data or transaction details)
2.4 Information We Do Not Collect
We do not collect Social Security numbers, full bank account numbers, payment card numbers, biometric data, or precise geolocation.
3. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Create and manage your parent account
- Connect to and monitor your child's linked financial accounts
- Detect and classify transactions (peer-to-peer transfers versus general purchases)
- Send you push notifications and SMS alerts when transactions occur
- Present transactions to you for approval or informational awareness
- Send your child SMS notifications with the outcome of your approval decisions
- Process subscription payments and manage your billing relationship
- Respond to your support requests
- Maintain the security and integrity of the Service
- Comply with legal obligations and enforce our Terms of Service
We do not use your financial data for advertising purposes. We do not sell your data to third parties. We do not use transaction data to build advertising profiles.
4. How We Share Your Information
We share information only as described below:
4.1 Service Providers
We share information with trusted third-party service providers who perform services on our behalf. These providers are contractually required to protect your information and may only use it to provide services to us.

4.2 With Your Child (Limited)
When you approve or deny a transaction, we send your child an SMS notification with the outcome. This notification includes the transaction amount, payment platform, and your decision. If you add a note to your decision, that note is included in the SMS.
4.3 Viral Notifications to Other Parents
If your child sends money to someone whose parent is not yet on iKnowMom, we may send that parent a single SMS informing them that a transfer occurred and inviting them to join the platform. This SMS is sent only once per contact and contains only the transfer amount and your child's first name. No financial account details are shared.
4.4 Legal Requirements
We may disclose your information if required to do so by law, subpoena, court order, or government request, or when we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to protect our rights, protect your safety or the safety of others, investigate fraud, or respond to a government request.
4.5 Business Transfers
If iKnowMom is acquired by or merged with another company, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you via email or prominent notice on our Service before your information is transferred and becomes subject to a different privacy policy.
4.6 We Do Not Sell Your Data
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information or your child's financial data to any third party for their own marketing or commercial purposes.
5. Data Retention
We retain your information for as long as your account is active and for a reasonable period thereafter, as follows:
- Account and profile data: retained for the duration of your account plus 2 years after deletion
- Transaction records: retained for 3 years from the transaction date
- Approval decisions: retained for 3 years from the decision date
- Plaid access tokens: deleted immediately upon account unlinking or account deletion
- Push notification tokens: deleted upon sign-out or account deletion
- Application logs: retained for 30 to 90 days
- Billing records: retained for 7 years as required by tax and accounting law
When data reaches the end of its retention period, it is securely deleted from our systems.
6. Your Rights and Choices
6.1 Access and Correction
You may access and update your account information at any time through the Settings section of the app. If you need assistance accessing or correcting your information, contact us at privacy@iknowmom.com.
6.2 Account Deletion
You may delete your account at any time through the app Settings or by emailing privacy@iknowmom.com. Upon deletion we will:
- Delete your profile and all child profiles
- Revoke and delete all Plaid access tokens
- Remove your push notification tokens
- Delete all personal data within 30 days of your verified request
- Retain only data we are legally required to keep (such as billing records)
6.3 Unlinking a Bank Account
You may unlink a bank account at any time through the Children section of the app. Upon unlinking, we revoke the associated Plaid access token and stop receiving new transaction data for that account. Historical transaction data is retained per the schedule in Section 5.
6.4 Notification Preferences
You may manage push notification preferences within the app Settings. You may opt out of SMS notifications by contacting us at privacy@iknowmom.com. Note that some SMS messages, such as OTP verification codes, are required to use the Service.
6.5 California Residents — CCPA Rights
If you are a California resident, you have the right to:
- Know what personal information we collect, use, and disclose
- Request deletion of your personal information
- Opt out of the sale of your personal information (we do not sell personal information)
- Non-discrimination for exercising your privacy rights

6.6 Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, and Other State Residents
Residents of states with comprehensive consumer privacy laws have rights similar to those described above, including the right to access, correct, delete, and obtain a portable copy of your personal data, and the right to opt out of profiling. Contact us at privacy@iknowmom.com to exercise these rights.
7. Children's Privacy
iKnowMom is designed for use by parents and legal guardians. The app is not directed at children. Parents provide their child's name, age, and optionally phone number as part of setting up monitoring. We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children under 13 without verifiable parental consent.
The financial transaction data we receive through Plaid relates to accounts that parents have linked and consented to monitor. Parents are responsible for obtaining any necessary consent from their child consistent with applicable law and their family's own standards.
If you believe we have inadvertently collected personal information from a child under 13 without appropriate consent, contact us immediately at privacy@iknowmom.com and we will delete the information promptly.
8. Data Security
We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your information, including:
- Encryption of all data in transit using TLS 1.2 or higher
- Encryption of all consumer financial data at rest using AES-256
- Plaid access tokens stored encrypted and never exposed in logs or API responses
- Role-based access controls limiting who can access production data
- Multi-factor authentication required for all administrative access
- Regular security reviews and vulnerability assessments
No method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is 100% secure. While we use commercially reasonable measures to protect your information, we cannot guarantee absolute security. In the event of a data breach that affects your personal information, we will notify you as required by applicable law.
9. Third-Party Links and Services
The Service may contain links to third-party websites or services. This Privacy Policy does not apply to those third parties. We encourage you to review the privacy policies of any third-party services you access through our app, including Plaid's privacy policy at plaid.com/legal.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will notify you by sending an SMS to your registered phone number or by displaying a prominent notice within the app at least 14 days before the changes take effect. The updated policy will be posted at iknowmom.com/privacy with a revised effective date.
Your continued use of the Service after the effective date of any changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy. If you do not agree to the updated policy, you should stop using the Service and delete your account.
